Lions-Texans: Detroit overcomes Jared Goff's 5 punts, rally to stun Houston 26-23 

The Lions overcame five interceptions from Jared Goff and a 16-point halftime deficit to win their seventh straight game

Sloppy quarterback play was the theme of the night at NRG Stadium, as Jared Goff (five) and C.J. Stroud (two) combined to throw seven interceptions, the most in a single NFL game since 2018. The Lions' defense shut out the Texans in the second half, allowing Detroit to rally from a 16-point halftime deficit. Ka'imi Fairbairn missed a go-ahead 58-yard field goal with just under two minutes remaining, setting the stage for the Houston native Bates. The Lions have won their seventh straight to improve to 8-1, while the Texans have fallen to 6-4.

Texans have lost three of four games

The Texans have lost three of their last four and fall to 6-4. They are still atop the AFC South and getting WR Nico Collins back next week should help. But the questions about this team's ceiling remain after tonight.

There is no shortage of ways we could approach what has happened to Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.

We could take the micro viewpoint, and tell you the litany of failures that led to Sunday’s 31-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, arguably the ugliest defeat of Rodgers’ era with the Jets. Or we could go the macro route, and recite the bleak and still-bottoming playoff percentages of this 3-7 team. We could even pull further back and go to the history books, and note how much this all feels a little like Brett Favre’s underwhelming single-season foray as the Jets' starting quarterback in 2008 ... except this season is exponentially worse and going off a cliff far more quickly.

This is a failed season, with an objectively bad team that was all leveraged against a soon-to-be 41-year-old quarterback who has sunken into the mediocre middle at his position. Once we recognize that, it opens the door to the legacy question that will hang over Rodgers for the remainder of this lost season.

Texans scoreless in second half

After taking a comfortable 23-7 lead into halftime, the Houston Texans did not score a single point in the second half.

C.J. Stroud was unable to recreate his rhythm from the first half, throwing two interceptions in the third quarter and facing more heat from the Lions' front.

Ka'imi Fairbairn had a chance to give the Texans the lead in the final minutes but pulled a 58-yard field goal wide left.

Lions stun the Texans and a national TV audience with an epic comeback win

 

The Detroit Lions are 8-1 and alone in first place atop the entire NFC. For about 58 minutes of Sunday night's game against the Texans in Houston, it sure looked like the Lions were headed for a second loss.

Not this team. Not Dan Campbell's gritty Lions.

Despite five interceptions from Jared Goff, some really shaky offensive line play much of the night and falling into a 23-7 halftime hole, the Lions pulled off a comeback for the ages. First-year kicker Jake Bates squeezed a 52-yard field goal about six inches inside the left upright as time expired to lift the Lions to a 26-23 win.

The Lions overcame so much in this one, with many of those obstacles being self-imposed. Goff was uncharacteristically off all night, not just on the interceptions. The run game did nothing for the first three quarters, a combination of poor blocking and designs that the Texans defense was more than ready to defend. There were costly penalties on both sides of the ball.

Aaron Glenn's undermanned defense played strong enough to keep the struggling offense within striking distance. Carlton Davis intercepted C.J. Stroud twice in the second half, the second one in the end zone with an incredible effort that prevented a sure-fire touchdown.

Detroit's defense shut out Houston in the second half. The Lions offense got one last chance to win after Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn missed badly from 58 yards. Bates had just made a close-shave inside the right upright from 56 to tie it up. Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown picked up enough yards to get Bates in range, and the Houston-area native delivered.

It was a thrilling comeback for the Lions, one that left the NBC broadcast crew stunned. The grit to pull this one off, on the road against the AFC South-leading Texans in prime time, is the sort of victory that will earn these Lions more "team of destiny" type of talk.

 

Crazy game for Goff

What a weird game for the Lions quarterback.

After throwing just four interceptions over the first nine weeks, Jared Goff was intercepted five times tonight in Houston and completed just 50 percent of his passes. Entering tonight, he was completing 74.9 percent of his passes.

Yet, he still mustered 240 yards passing and two touchdowns while manufacturing a pair of critical drives to seal the comeback.

Lions win seventh game in a row

A hilariously stupid game ends in victory for the Lions. They improve to 8-1 on the season. They've won seven in a row. You simply cannot count them out.
