Oyamazakura is a type of cherry tree that grows wild in the northern part of Japan. Its flowers are larger than those of mountain cherry trees and are a deep pink color. It is also known as Ezozakura.
How many types of
cherry blossoms are there?
It is said that there
are nine basic species of cherry blossoms that grow wild in Japan, and 200 to
300 cultivated species. Cherry blossoms are prone to natural hybridization, and
new species are sometimes discovered in the mountains and fields, and sometimes
artificially created, so it is said to be difficult to determine the exact number.
Basic species of Japanese cherry blossoms
There are nine basic species of cherry blossoms that grow
wild in the mountains and fields of Japan. Many natural hybrids and
horticultural species have been born from these wild species, so they can be
considered the parents of Japanese cherry blossoms. There is also a theory that
adds the Kanhizakura cherry tree to this list, making the number of basic
species ten.
Oshima Cherry Blossoms

Oshimazakura (Oshima cherry tree) is a cherry tree found in
the Izu Islands, and is thought to have mutated from Kasumizakura (Kasumi cherry
tree). The flowers are 3-4cm in diameter, white in color, and have a unique
cherry fragrance. The leaves that appear at the same time as the flowers also
have a fragrance, and are famous for being used to wrap sakura mochi (cherry
rice cakes).
Characteristics and how to distinguish them
They bloom at the same time as Somei-Yoshino cherry trees,
but they are easy to distinguish because their flowers are white and have a
pleasant fragrance.
Mountain cherry blossoms
Yamazakura is a cherry tree that grows wild in the southern
part of Japan. It is considered the representative species of cherry tree in
Japan, and before Somei-Yoshino appeared, Yamazakura was synonymous with cherry
blossom viewing. Many of the cherry trees in Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, famous
for cherry blossom viewing, are Yamazakura.
Characteristics and how to distinguish them
The characteristic is that the flowers and leaves appear at
the same time. The flower color varies from white, pale pink, to bright pink.
What is Sakura?

Cherry blossoms are deciduous trees that bloom beautifully and are found widely in the temperate zone of Eurasia, including Japan. They are also flowering trees that represent spring in Japan.
Until recently, cherry blossoms were thought to belong to the Plum genus, but now the so-called "cherry blossoms" that we admire for their beautiful flowers are classified in the Prunus genus, Prunus subfamily.
