Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of our Holy Father Francis. This morning at 7:35 am, Bishop Francis of Rome returned home. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with integrity, courage and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commit the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff who captivated the world with his humble style and concern for the poor, has died, the Vatican announced Monday. He was 88. The pope had suffered several illnesses during his 12 years as papacy and had recently survived a severe bout of double pneumonia.

Pope Francis, 88, died Monday, ushering in the secluded spring period during which the College of Cardinals governs before a new pope is elected.
The Pope was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, 14 February 2025, after suffering from bronchitis for several days. He died on Easter Monday, just a day before he delighted crowds of devotees at the Vatican with his appearance on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica on Easter Sunday. The pope became pope in 2013 after his predecessor Benedict XVI resigned. Pope Francis' medical condition gradually deteriorated and on Tuesday, 18 February, his doctors diagnosed bilateral pneumonia. After 38 days in hospital, the late Pope returned to his Vatican residence at Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery.
